An adult 21 or older may cultivate up to three mature and three immature plants, subject to a household maximum. No household may exceed six mature and six immature plants, even when more than two adults live there. Mature and immature status matters, so growers need to track plants rather than count only pots.
The rule applies to personal cultivation. It does not authorize unlicensed commercial production or sale.
Security is part of the cultivation right.
Plants and harvested cannabis must be kept from unauthorized access, including access by people under 21. A growing area should not be visible or freely accessible to children, guests, or the public. Electrical load, water, ventilation, mold, and fire risk also need practical attention.
Home-grow permission is not a reason to alter building systems unsafely or violate applicable codes.
Housing can narrow the practical options.
Landlords may establish reasonable cultivation restrictions, and federally assisted housing raises additional issues. Read the lease and building rules before buying equipment. Renters should not assume that state permission overrides property terms, federal obligations, or damage provisions.
